Pigeon Control

The rock dove or rock pigeon is found world wide. Pigeons begin by causing aesthetic damage to residential homes and commercial businesses. As the population grows, disease comes into the equation. The most common pigeon diseases include histoplasmosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis, St. Louis encephalitis, salmonellosis, and E. coli. When you have a pigeon issue, make sure you consult a professional pest control service technician that can explain the risks associated with any pigeon clean-up requirements and what needs to be done for a long-term pest free solution. To learn more about ridding yourself of invasive wildlife, contact Peregrine Pest Control today!

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

The first signs of pigeons would be seeing them hang around open areas of structures followed by pigeon droppings building up in gutters, down spouts, and open roof top areas. Each year in Calgary, pigeons cause extensive damage to a variety of structures. Pigeon droppings carry many diseases including histoplasmosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis, St. Louis encephalitis, salmonellosis, and E. coli. When left unchecked the destruction caused by pigeons represent serious health risks. On residential properties, pigeons perch on open roof tops, gutters and other objects. They force their way through soffits, making a home on the interior of the roof line. In commercial settings, pigeons make nests next to HVAC units and perch on open roof ledges.

How to Identify a Pigeon

The rock dove or rock pigeon is pale grey with two black bars on each wing. Domestic and feral pigeons vary in colour and pattern. There are few visible differences between males and females. Pigeons have a high reproduction rate. The average life span is three to four years in the wild.

OUR SOLUTION

The approach to solving a pigeon infestation is similar in both a residential and commercial setting. The first step in our process at Peregrine is to provide a free no obligation estimate for the client. The inspection is usually done at ground level. The focus is to identify key harbourage areas, followed by nuisance perching points. Because pigeons have such a high reproductive rate our solution focuses on using physical products to stop pigeons from returning to any given area. The most common products we use are eight-inch-wide bird spike, ¾ and 2-inch black netting, bird spiders, shock track, and bird wire. Other tools include live trapping of pigeons and deterrent tools such as the AgriLaser. When required we install one-way doors to allow pigeons to safely exit a structure prior to installing physical barriers. Cleanup and remediation of pigeon droppings, nesting materials, and other associated pigeon debris can be a labour-intensive exercise. We offer three levels of clean up. At the time of inspection, the pest control service technician will explain and recommend the level of clean up that will return your property as close to a pre-pigeon structure possible.

COMMON CONCERNS

The pigeons are on my neighbour’s house. What can I do about it?

At Peregrine, when we are doing residential pigeon control work, it is a common scenario to be sitting on a roof top taking a break, looking down the street and seeing another three or four houses that have pigeon issues.
Sometimes the pigeon issues aren’t visible from the ground, or the home owner isn’t aware of the extent of the pigeon problem. Depending on comfort level, you can knock on the neighbour’s door and have a conversation explaining what you are doing to your house to push pigeons away. This neighbour may want to participate. The other choice is just to ask your Peregrine pest control service technician to drop off door hangers to the affected residences. This is a nice, warm way of raising awareness.

Why can’t I poison the pigeons?

In Canada every chemical has a label. The label is the law. It says what you can and can’t do. If the pest isn’t on the label you can’t use the product for an off label application.

Can I shoot the pigeon?

In large urban areas it is not usually a safe decision to discharge a firearm. Always check with your local municipality about what the bylaws are for your area and make a safe and good decision. Shooting one pigeon usually will not solve a pigeon problem. Because of the high reproduction rates of pigeons and the high number of pigeons in general, shooting and/or the use of live traps will not bring the pigeon population to zero. At best you can hope to reduce the population for the short to mid term. The best strategy is to use physical products to stop pigeons from returning to any given area.

Thanks for the great job!

We installed solar panels on our roof and found that it did not take long for pigeons to be attracted to the roof. We had not had a problem previously so it was related to the solar panels. We had Peregrine look at the panels and make recommendations. We decided to have a barrier installed along the edge of the panels. This was done efficiently and per the quote. The barriers are like the spikes installed under bridges to prevent birds from roosting on beams and supports. The barriers have eliminated the problem with birds. Thanks for the great job!

Very efficient, professional, and good workmanship.

Peregrine General Pest Control was referred to us by someone who had used their service for a problem with mice. We hired them to deal with pigeons at a condo complex with 18 units, and they did the job well. Also, their price was half of what we got from another company.
Nick responded to us very quickly and had the work done in a timely manner. The roof of the condominium is very steep, so it required quite an effort to even climb up there. Nick told us to call him right away if there were any problems down the road, and he would take care of it.
We have had no sightings of pigeons or droppings since the job was completed. I would highly recommend Peregrine General Pest Control.
