Voles

Every spring, when the snow melts, damage from voles is found on residential properties. Voles make burrows along the edging of the lawn and garden beds, sidewalks, and driveways. In Calgary, with summer being so short, people are amazed at the destruction voles have caused over the winter. At Peregrine, our pest control service technicians use a combination of tools to resolve vole problems. Effective techniques for solving a vole infestation include the use of commercial grade rodenticides, snap traps, and live traps. For the right solution for your residence, consult your pest control service technician.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Voles are commonly mistaken for other small animals. Voles thrive on small plants yet, like shrews, they will eat dead animals, and like mice or rats, they can live on almost any nut or fruit. Additionally, voles will target plants more than most other small animals, making their presence evident. Voles will readily girdle small trees and ground cover, much like a porcupine. This girdling can easily kill young plants and is not healthy for trees or other shrubs. Voles will often eat succulent root systems and will burrow under plants or ground cover and eat away until the plant is dead. Bulbs in the ground are another favorite target for voles; their excellent burrowing and tunnelling skills give them access to sensitive areas without clear or early warning. The presence of large numbers of voles is often only identifiable after they have destroyed a number of plants and lawn area.

How to Identify a Vole

Voles are small rodents that grow to 3 – 9 inches depending on the species. They can have 5 – 10 litters per year. Gestation lasts for three weeks and the young voles reach sexual maturity in a month. As a result of this high reproduction rate, vole populations can grow very large within a very short period of time. Since litters average 5 – 10 young, a single vole can birth a hundred more voles in a year.

OUR SOLUTION

The first step in solving a vole problem is by having an inspection done by your pest control service technician. Typical solutions begin by installing rock exterior stations that contain a commercial grade mouse poison. With heavy to severe infestations, snap traps and live traps can be used. Consideration needs to be given. Are the voles in the front yard or backyard? Are there dogs present on the property or neighbour’s property? Are young children going to pick up a snap trap by mistake? Once the voles have been eliminated, filling the holes with soil and grass seed will take away the opportunity for a reoccurrence.

COMMON CONCERNS

Why do I have voles?

This is always a great question for any pest. It is a bit like asking which came first, the chicken or the egg? Keeping in mind that voles like to feed off grasses, seeds, nuts, and plant bulbs, if you have an established yard with lush gardens and beautiful grass it is a great environment for voles to thrive. If you happen to live next to a green space, pond, lake, or park you have an increased likelihood of pest pressure from a wide variety of pests, including voles.

My neighbour has voles and won’t do anything about it. Can I still solve my problem?

On a very regular basis, all structures are being tested by wildlife. We may not be aware of the presence of wildlife, as they can lurk in the shadows, so to speak. In the winter, you may see footprints in the snow. In the spring, you may see foot prints in the mud, or nesting material hanging out of a vent. Once a pest is eliminated, you create a void in the neighbourhood. This allows for another animal to enter and take over this space. Can you solve a vole problem if your neighbour doesn’t do their part? Yes, you can, however it will take more time and effort on your part. For the right advice, remember to speak to your pest control service technician from Peregrine.

How do I know if I have a vole or mouse issue in my garage?

A vole and a house mouse are, at casual glance, very similar. Only once you have a vole caught can you compare the features of a vole to a mouse. A vole doesn’t want to be on the inside of a structure. Voles love to burrow, create runways in lawn areas and garden beds. If you do happen to have a vole issue on the inside of a structure, it is more likely bad luck than that the vole intended on entering the structure. You would always assume a mouse is inside the structure first until proven wrong. The process for removing a vole is the same as a house mouse.

Huge help

Had voles last year and a pocket gopher that moved in due to expanding suburbia. Called many for quotes but Marilyn was the first and only one to take the time to help me figure out what the problem really was and how to deal with it. Chuck came out and helped me understand how the critters live and how to prevent their return… Huge help as i was stressed about my plants, kids and using traps around kids. in case next year my garden looks better than the mud hill behind me, I will call them again if I have problems but I’m sure that with such thorough work from chuck, we will be fine. Thanks guys!
